In my history class, we learned about the Cuban Missile Crisis during the Cold War. The learning objective was to understand the political tensions and military threats that emerged between the United States and the Soviet Union during this period.
As part of the assignment, we participated in a simulation as members of ExComm, a group responsible for advising the President on national security issues. Our group received top-secret documents and had to work collaboratively to make sense of the threat posed by the Soviet Union's deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba. We debated different options for how the US should respond, weighing the risks of military action versus diplomatic negotiations. Eventually, we settled on a strategy of naval quarantine, which aimed to prevent Soviet ships from delivering missiles to Cuba.
The skill that this assignment addressed was thinking and problem solving. We had to analyze complex information, evaluate various options, and make decisions under time pressure. We also needed to communicate our ideas effectively and collaborate with others to reach a consensus.
I am most proud of the way my group worked together and came up with a thoughtful and strategic response to the crisis. It was challenging to balance different perspectives and opinions, but we listened to each other and were able to come to a decision that we all agreed on.
The most difficult part of this assignment was the time pressure. We had limited time to read and analyze the documents, and had to make decisions quickly. If I could do this task over again, I would spend more time preparing and researching beforehand, so that I could be more confident in my analysis and recommendations.
